For the uninitiated, Beach House are a fantastic Baltimore based dream pop duo. They recently played Bristol Thekkla, and for some unimaginable reason, I didn't get my arse in gear, and buy tickets. Their music is the kind of stuff which music writers go mad for, hence the consistent rave reviews, but perhaps the general public dont quite take to as readily. As a result, the band have retained quite a low profile, despite a cult following, and being well liked in celebrity circles (intriguingly, Jay Z and Beyonce were spotted at a gig!).
The music itself is ethereal, spooky and undeniably beautiful. The haunting melodies and Victoria Legrand's soothing vocals wrap themselves around you like a warm blanket. In other words, exactly what you need after a heavy night.
This song is one of my favourites, it's from their eponymously titled debut LP, and it kind of defines the expression "downbeat" pretty well. The off kilter slide guitar and woozy harmonies are lovely, adding to the blissful images of repose; "lay your head next to mine", and sleep. However, as is the way with Beach House, there is more than a hint of the night about this song, with the slightly sinister sounding organ creaking through the whole song. It's like being lulled to sleep by an evil enchantress. Utterly seductive.
For more autumnal beauties like this try their fantastic LP from last year, Teen Dream.
