With news today of the Mercury Prize nominees I couldn't help but notice one of my all time faves King Creosote is up there. While I'm not entirely sure of some of the candidates, and I don't really give a fig about prizes really, it would be nice to see it reward a fine artist from the left(ish) field. It's not as if Adele or Elbow need another accolade, regardless of the quality of their music. And the same goes for PJ Harvey, who much as I admire her, has become a cultural must like. Here is the list. Though I am not acquainted with all on the list (ghost poet, anyone?) , I'm sure Diamond Mine, is as good as anything on there. Concise, melodic and moving it is a great album. Moreover, a victory would be a triumph for the Scottish folk scene, and a reward for a tireless songsmith with (apparently) over 40 albums to his name!
I think King Creosote's time has come. A mainstream audience seems ripe for a bit of folk, think how Laura Marling and Mumford & Sons, have been lapped up. Bringeth Kenny Anderson, the real deal, whose beautiful songs deserve to be heard. Wry, sad, funny and with a down to earth poetry that makes the quotidian sparkle, King Creosote haven't really put a foot wrong as far as I can see. I hope he does a Anthony and The Johnsons.
