Hello and welcome to my first ever blog post. Scribbled sounds is, as the name suggests, simply my scribblings about sounds. I'm gonna post what I've been listening to recently (i.e in the last 5 minutes), give a little background/ context, throw in a bit about myself from time to time and see if anyone's interested!
Forgive me for thinking the world needs another music blog (or indeed any blog), but roll with it (or just humour me), as its gonna be fun.
Last night I went to the Royal Oak on Windsor Bridge and saw some live music with friends. The leading act were ace; just one guy, an acoustic guitar, and a rapt audience. His style was a kind of cross between Nick Drake and Iron & Wine (below), in other words, right up my street. Really soothing, gentle folk with some real poetry in there too.
I wish i could remember their name (they came on quite late into the
evening!). Anyway, I'd highly recommend the pub in general; great ales, cracking music and a charming bohemian vibe.
Today has taken up where yesterday left off in that I've been having a bit of a folk binge, and not left the house. Been listening to woozy, Sunday music all day like Stornoway and a bit of vintage Fleetwood but the track I've chosen to link is from Iron & Wine, a great band perfect for fragile Sunday heads. Also, with a beard that gives automatic folk kudos (and makes my friend james' look like bumfluff) it seemed like a no brainer. Anyway, this song pretty much creates the genre; epic folk. Its all hypnotic, spiralling melody and lyrics grasping after higher meaning and, "the pearly gates." Its almost written from a beyond the grave perspective, but as with most Iron & Wine, the lyrics are visionary and evocative but ultimately hard to pin down. What adds more interest is the conflict between the blissful, repetitive guitar lines and the often dark and biblical musings of Beam.
Many people will know this only from the film, In Good Company, but I strongly advise you check out their albums if beardy, ethereal folk in any way floats your boat. Beautiful stuff.
