Say what you like about the young German, he certainly has his own style. His records are mystical, filled with well judged film dialogue, spatterings of philosophy, and enough musical space to swing a cat named Dub around in. Jaar's compositions are not BPM high, or floor fillers; they are mind fillers, head nodders.
While many contemporaries are content to keep the tempos high and the production crisp, Jaar carved out a niche for himself last year with the stunning, Space Is Only Noise LP. Whilst some contended that he took minimal a bit too far (i.e 'unfinished'), Jaar looks at the bigger picture; the songs buried beneath his at times fuggy production, are some of the most inventive I heard all last year. Forever shifting key and time, his use of instrumental sampling is sublime. See 'Keep Me There' (below) for the best cut and pasted sax solo you've heard all day.
And this gem I discovered recently (a remix of deep house giant Maceo Plex) just shows how inimitable Jaar's melodic stamp is. He turns a club leviathan into a textured piece of cerebral euro disco.
Hipster house, downtempo, minimal techno call him what you will, this guy is one to keep tabs on as he matures.
