Good ol' hairy rock

Pitchfork just alerted me to the latest stirrings from one of my favourite gangs of hirsute musicians. That description doesn't narrow it down, admittedly! The men in question are those that form My Morning Jacket. The bands' sprawling, countrified rock wig outs have been gracing my van of late, in particular the stellar It Still Moves album. Ace driving music. It's capable of transporting you to some sun bleached field in Kentucky, wherever you are...even the M5!
The great thing about MMJ apart from the obviously awesome voice of frontman Jim James, is that they just dont rush things. They dont try to do anything too clever, either. They just make sure that what they do, damn works. Their music reminds me of something I heard Neil Young say about his guitar style; that anyone could hit the notes he plays, but that he just makes sure he hits the right ones. The key is in the restraint. One song which typifies the MMJ style is "I Will Sing You Songs", building gradually from humble beginnings, to a stately, noisy and spacey finale. Bring on those UK tour dates.
